Base Currency

The base currency is the first currency listed in a pair — the one being bought or sold, whose value the quoted price directly measures.

In any currency pair, the base currency sits on the left side of the slash. The price you see tells you how many units of the quote currency are needed to purchase exactly one unit of the base currency. If GBP/USD is quoted at 1.2500, the base currency is the British pound, and one pound costs 1.25 US dollars.

The base currency is sometimes called the "transaction currency" because it is the currency whose quantity stays fixed at one unit while the price fluctuates. When traders say a currency pair "went up," they mean the base currency gained value — it now buys more of the quote currency than it did before. When the pair "went down," the base currency weakened.

Convention, not logic, determines which currency is base in a given pair. The euro is almost always base against other major currencies; the US dollar is base against most emerging-market currencies such as USD/MXN or USD/ZAR. Understanding this distinction matters because reading a percentage-change column incorrectly — assuming the dollar is always the base — is one of the most common errors newer market watchers make. The how to read FX quotes guide covers these conventions in detail.
