Basis Point (bp)

A basis point is one one-hundredth of one percentage point, equal to 0.01%, used to describe small but meaningful changes in interest rates and yields.

When rates or yields move by tiny fractions, saying "the rate rose by 0.25%" is accurate but easy to mishear as 25% in fast conversation. Professionals solve this with basis points, abbreviated bp (sometimes bps). One basis point equals 0.01%, so 25 basis points equals 0.25%, and 100 basis points equals one full percentage point. The unit removes ambiguity completely.

Basis points appear most often in bond markets, central bank decisions, and foreign exchange. When a central bank raises its benchmark interest rate by 50 bp, that means half a percentage point. On a large bond portfolio, 50 bp can translate into a significant real-money difference even though the number sounds small. Economists also quote the yield spread — the gap between two bond yields — in basis points because the differences are often just a few hundredths of a percent.

A common confusion: basis points measure changes or differences, not absolute levels. If a yield stands at 4.50%, that figure is simply quoted as a percentage. But if it rises to 4.75%, the move is described as 25 bp. Another slip is confusing basis points with percentage points; they are the same concept but basis points emphasize the fine-grained scale that matters most in fixed-income and currency markets.
