Bitcoin Dominance

Bitcoin dominance is the percentage of total cryptocurrency market capitalization represented by Bitcoin alone, used as a gauge of Bitcoin's relative weight in the crypto market.

Market capitalization — or market cap — is calculated by multiplying the number of coins in circulation by the current price. Add up the market caps of every tracked cryptocurrency and you get total crypto market cap. Bitcoin dominance is simply Bitcoin's market cap divided by that total, expressed as a percentage. Because both the numerator and denominator change constantly, dominance is a live ratio, not a fixed number. You can monitor it alongside other crypto data at /crypto.

Traders typically watch dominance as a sentiment signal. Historically, markets have shown that dominance tends to rise when investors rotate out of smaller altcoins into Bitcoin during periods of uncertainty — Bitcoin is often treated as the relative safe haven inside crypto. Conversely, falling dominance has historically coincided with periods when capital flows into altcoins and tokens, sometimes called "altseason." Neither direction is guaranteed to continue; it is a descriptive ratio, not a predictive one.

A common confusion: falling Bitcoin dominance does not necessarily mean Bitcoin's price is falling. If altcoins are rising faster than Bitcoin, Bitcoin's share of the total shrinks even as its own price climbs. Dominance measures relative size, not absolute performance. For context on how total market value is constructed, see crypto market cap explained and circulating supply.
