Retail Sales

A government-reported monthly measure of the total receipts that retailers collect from selling goods to consumers, used as a gauge of consumer spending strength.

Retail sales data captures how much money consumers are spending at stores — physical and online — during a given month. The report typically covers categories like food and beverage outlets, auto dealerships, clothing stores, electronics shops, and gas stations. Because consumer spending makes up a large share of economic output in most developed economies, the retail sales release is closely watched as a real-time pulse on household demand. You can track related economic releases on the economic calendar.

One critical caveat: the headline retail sales figure is nominal, meaning it is measured in current dollars and has not been adjusted for inflation. Suppose gasoline prices spike one month. Consumers might actually be buying the same amount of fuel, but the dollar total at the pump rises — and that pushes the retail sales number higher even though no extra goods changed hands. Economists therefore often focus on a version that strips out auto sales and gasoline, known as the "control group," which more cleanly reflects underlying consumer behavior.

A common confusion is treating retail sales as a complete picture of consumer spending. The report covers goods but largely excludes services — things like rent, healthcare, and haircuts — which in many economies represent the majority of what households spend. For a broader view, economists look at personal consumption expenditure data alongside retail sales rather than using either figure alone.
