Risk-On / Risk-Off (RORO)

Risk-on / risk-off (RORO) describes the broad market regime in which investor sentiment simultaneously pushes money toward higher-risk assets (risk-on) or pulls it toward safer ones (risk-off).

RORO is a cross-asset phenomenon — it does not happen in just one market. In a risk-on environment, investors historically move capital toward equities, high-yield bonds, emerging-market currencies, and commodities linked to growth. In a risk-off environment, that same capital tends to flow into safe havens like government bonds, gold, the U.S. dollar, and the Japanese yen. You can watch these rotations play out in real time across the stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities pages.

The RORO framework matters because it explains why seemingly unrelated markets move together. Suppose global growth fears spike one morning — equities fall, oil falls, the Australian dollar (sensitive to commodity exports) falls, while U.S. Treasuries and the yen rise. None of those assets are directly linked, but they are all reacting to the same shift in sentiment. Economists and traders watch correlations across asset classes to gauge whether a RORO regime is in force.

Triggers for a risk-off episode have historically included financial crises, geopolitical shocks, surprise central bank actions, and sudden spikes in the VIX. Risk-on periods tend to accompany strong economic data, easing monetary policy, or a resolution of an earlier uncertainty. Neither regime lasts forever, and the transition between them can be abrupt.

A key caution: RORO is a descriptive framework, not a precise formula. Not every asset plays its "expected" role in every episode — during extreme stress, even gold has occasionally been sold as investors scrambled for cash. For a thorough treatment of the concept, see the guide Risk-On / Risk-Off and the related discussion in What Moves Exchange Rates.
