What Makes These Metals "Precious"?
The word precious metals covers a small group of naturally rare, chemically stable elements that resist corrosion and have historically been used as stores of value. Like gold, all three are quoted per troy ounce — a unit equal to 31.1 grams, slightly heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 grams. That distinction matters: when a data table shows a price, the unit is always the troy ounce, not any other measure. Confusing the two would make every price look about 10% off.
Silver: The Split-Personality Metal
Silver occupies an unusual position in markets because demand comes from two almost entirely separate worlds: finance and industry. On the financial side, silver has served as money for thousands of years and still attracts investors who treat it as a safe haven or an inflation hedge, much like gold. On the industrial side, it is one of the best electrical and thermal conductors of any element.
That industrial role is growing. What Moves Silver Prices?

The gold-silver ratio is simply the gold price divided by the silver price — both in troy ounces. Suppose gold is quoted at $2,000 and silver at $25 (these are hypothetical examples only); the ratio would be 80, meaning it takes 80 ounces of silver to equal the value of one ounce of gold. The ratio has no fixed "correct" level; it has ranged from below 20 to above 100 over the past century.
Traders typically watch this ratio as a relative-value signal between the two metals. Economists read a very high ratio as silver being cheap relative to gold, and a very low ratio as the reverse. It is a descriptive data point, not a mechanical rule — context always matters.
Platinum: The Autocatalyst Metal
Platinum is rarer than gold in the earth's crust and carries a distinctive industrial purpose: it is a core component in autocatalysts — the catalytic converters fitted to vehicle exhaust systems that convert harmful gases like nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide into less harmful emissions. This single application has historically accounted for the largest share of platinum demand.
Platinum works best in catalytic converters for petrol (gasoline) engines. As a result, platinum demand tracks the global production cycle for gasoline-powered vehicles. When car manufacturing slows — during a recession, a supply-chain disruption, or a shift in consumer preference — platinum demand can fall with it. This ties platinum prices closely to the health of the auto industry, which in turn connects to broader GDP and PMI signals.
Supply Concentration in South Africa
Roughly 70–80% of global platinum mining takes place in South Africa's Bushveld Igneous Complex, one of the most mineral-rich geological formations on Earth. This extreme concentration means that strikes, power outages, flooding, or political instability in a single country can ripple directly into global supply. Supply disruptions of this kind are a classic supply shock for platinum markets.
Zimbabwe is a distant second producer, with smaller contributions from Russia and North America. Because production is so geographically concentrated, traders and analysts typically watch South African mining output data closely alongside the auto-sector numbers. Palladium: Russia's Metal
Palladium is platinum's close chemical cousin but with a different geographic footprint. Russia — primarily through the Norilsk Nickel mining complex in Siberia — has historically supplied roughly 40% of global palladium, making it the world's dominant source. Like platinum, palladium is used in autocatalysts, but it is more effective in petrol engines at the temperatures typically found in lighter vehicles. The two metals are not perfect substitutes — the chemistry differs — though industrial users have, in certain periods, shifted between them depending on relative prices and availability. That potential for substitution is one reason traders watch both metals together rather than in isolation.
Sanctions, Supply and the Car Cycle
Palladium's tight supply base and Russia's dominant role mean that geopolitical tensions — especially anything affecting Russian exports — have historically produced sharp price reactions.
